1. With Barbara Hegenbart's departure, what services will be provided to the ARE department?
The AREL will continue to be staffed, albeit with reduced hours. Donna and Sheila will continue to run day-to-day operations at the library, provide assistance, and make referrals to librarians at Shields.
2. Will Barbara's position be filled?
Given the current budgetary climate on campus and a freeze on hiring in the library, there are no plans at this time to recruit a new ARE librarian. However, Adam Siegel, currently bibliographer for economics, business, and management, will serve as acting ARE bibliographer.
3. Will there be a librarian working at AREL?
Yes. Beginning fall quarter, Adam will work at the reference desk at the AREL Tuesday and Thursdays, 1 - 3 p.m., and by appointment. Adam will be at Shields Monday – Friday and will be available for consultation in by phone, email, on in person at either Shields or the AREL.
4. What impact will we see on the AREL collections?
Giannini Foundation funding for AREL journals has been eliminated. Shields Library will be able to make up the shortfall on a title-by-title basis. ARE faculty will be asked to prioritize journals and serials for which they would like continuing access. Given the transitional state of the library space itself, most new print acquisitions will be made for Shields. In most cases, print journals that have been part of the AREL's routing collection are currently also available online. As current subscriptions lapse, Adam will work with faculty to guarantee continued access to broadest selection of ARE journals and serials.
